Persian Kashan Carpet, Size: 390cm x 293cm Size: 12ft.10in x 9ft.7in
The history of the Kashan rug (also spelled Keshan) is closely tied to the artistic and cultural heritage of Kashan, one of Iran’s most important historic weaving centers. Kashan rugs are considered among the finest and most classical examples of Persian carpet art.
Carpet weaving in Kashan dates back to at least the pre-Islamic era. The city was already known for luxury textiles during the Sasanian Empire (224–651 CE). However, few early carpets survive due to the fragile nature of textiles.
The true golden age of Kashan rugs began under the Safavid dynasty (1501–1736), when carpet weaving became a royal art form.
Kashan became a major production center for court carpets.
Designs became highly refined, featuring:
Medallion patterns
Floral arabesques
Garden motifs
Intricate curvilinear designs
One of the most famous carpets of this era is the Ardabil Carpet (though woven in northwest Iran, it reflects Safavid craftsmanship similar to Kashan traditions).
